The Sustainable Leather Foundation (SLF) has joined forces with the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) to promote sustainable practices within the continent’s leather industry. According to the SLF, this agreement will play an important role in supporting the leather sector’s socio-economic and environmental responsibilities, and the organisation is providing assessments, audits and training for ALLPI members.

With headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, ALLPI was established in 1990 and currently organises projects across ten African countries. The SLF – founded in 2020 – uses a ‘transparency dashboard’ and certification framework to focus on sustainability. Both organisations are said to be dedicated to improving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards within the global leather value chain. Nicholas Mudungwe – ALLPI’s executive director – expressed enthusiasm for both bodies’ shared commitment to advancing levels of sustainability within the leather sector.
