At the end of 2024, PPE certification technical lead Pete Doughty concluded six years as convenor of the international and European standardisation committees which look after standards for safety footwear. The two committees – CEN/TC 161 and ISO/TC 94/SC 3 – work in parallel to develop a range of standards that are applicable to safety, protective and occupational footwear, as well as leg protectors and key protective components such as protective toe caps and perforation-resistant inserts. These bodies comprise two working groups – ‘WG1’, which creates the test methods and ‘WG2’, which defines the requirements for these methods.

Pete has been involved with the safety footwear standardisation committees for over 20 years, having assumed the role of convenor in 2019. SATRA staff members have held this role for over 30 years, with the previous members of the SATRA team leading the committees being Robin Brown, Malcom Peet, Richard Turner and Austin Simmons.

From the beginning of 2025, Simon Courtney (divisional manager for footwear) has replaced Pete, and this continues SATRA involvement in the standardisation committees. Simon says: “This is an important role which allows SATRA to be actively involved in creating the most comprehensive standards for industrial footwear, in order to provide wearers with the most appropriate levels of protection for the different tasks they undertake in the workplace. I look forward to continuing the diligent work of Pete and previous SATRA members of staff before him.”
