Strong year for Brazilian leather industry

The area of hides and skins exported from Brazil was said to have increased by 22.3 per cent over 2023.

According to the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), sales of hides and skins shipped overseas from Brazil generated USD 1.26 billion during 2024. This is said to represent an increase in value of 12.5 per cent compared to the previous year. The area of hides and skins that were exported reportedly increased by 22.3 per cent over 2023 and, in terms of weight, total exports were claimed to be 38.8 per cent higher.

José Fernando Bello, executive president of the CICB, said: “This year has been crucial for us. We worked relentlessly on issues such as compliance, traceability and customs barriers, achieving results that set the stage for further growth in 2025.”

The CICB has recently published a ‘Raw Material Guide’ for companies wishing to obtain traceable raw material data within Brazil, and the federal government has launched what it calls a ‘National Plan for Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffalo’.
