India reports boost in footwear exports

India’s non-leather and leather footwear exports during the 2024 to 2025 financial year are said to have increased by almost 25 per cent, according to the nation’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE). This has resulted in a final overseas sales figure of USD 5.7 billion (GBP 4.3 billion).
The CLE believes that Indian shoemakers are likely to exceed export totals of USD 6.5 billion (GBP 4.9 billion) during the coming year, with demand for products remaining strong across both developed and developing markets. The body has stated that India exceeded its sector export target for the past financial year by USD 1 billion (GBP 748 million).
CLE chairman Rajendra Kumar Jalan mentioned that performance has been strong in key markets such as the USA and the UK. He added that despite a 10 per cent tariff increase imposed by the USA, India’s footwear exporters have continued to offer discounts, and have reported no orders being cancelled.
The Indian footwear sector reportedly employs 4.2 million people and the CLE report notes that Chinese investors have shown interest in setting up joint production operations in India.
