More than 200 very old shoes have washed ashore on a beach in south Wales. The black leather hobnailed footwear, which is believed to date back to the Victorian era, was discovered by volunteers from the Beach Academy social enterprise who were cleaning up rock pools at Ogmore-by-Sea in the Vale of Glamorgan.
According to the organisation’s founding director, Emma Lamport, the shoes may have come from a shipwrecked Italian cargo vessel that is said to have struck nearby Tusker Rock about 150 years ago while carrying a cargo which included leather footwear.
