Skechers to build factory in Algeria

No fewer than two million Skechers shoes may be made in Algeria by 2031.

US-based Skechers is to build its first factory in Africa under an agreement it has signed with an Algerian partner. Goals for the new plant announced by Algeria’s Ministry of Commerce and Export Promotion include the annual production of 300,000 pairs of shoes in the first phase, with this number expected to rise to two million in 2031 once the development is fully completed.

“This project embodies the State’s strategy aimed at replacing imports with national production, through attracting productive foreign investments and strengthening partnerships with major global brands,” commented government minister Kamel Rezig.

Mr Rezig oversaw the recent signing of the deal between Skechers and the Tradifoot company to supply the local market, as well as to export footwear to Africa, Europe and further afield. The first phase of the project located in the town of Bab Ali, 20 km west of Algiers, is due to be completed in Q1 of 2027 and will cover approximately 22,000 square metres. The factory is expected to support 450 jobs in its first phase, with this number ultimately growing to 1,500 employees.
