Footwear consumption in the US jumped by 14 per cent last year, according to the recently produced ShoeStats 2011 report. The figures suggest that US shoppers bought 2.27 billion pairs of shoes – equivalent to more than seven pairs of shoes for every man, woman and child in the country.

“After a difficult 2009, the US footwear industry has reason for optimism,” said AAFA President and Chief Executive, Kevin Burke. “The industry experienced some growth in employment numbers,” he continued. “Because almost 99 per cent of footwear sold in the US is produced internationally, it is clear that these well-paying US jobs are directly supported by international trade.”

A number of key US footwear retailers and importers are pushing for Congress to pass the ‘Affordable Footwear Act’. This legislation would reportedly eliminate taxes said to add more than 25 per cent to the retail price of more than half of the shoes imported into the US annually.
