The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has sent an urgent appeal to Provincial Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, asking him to order an immediate supply of water to be arranged for the Tannery Zone in the Korangi Industrial Area, which is facing an ongoing drought situation.
According to PTA Chairman Khurshid Ahmed, most of the area’s wells – which were a major source of water to industry – have dried up, and the water supply from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has remained in a suspended state for several years. The PTA claims that it has become necessary for the tanneries to receive water supplies via private water tankers, and that the expense of this continuing operation has resulted in increasing production costs and uncompetitive exports.
