US footwear imports fell in 2011

According to the US Department of Commerce’s Annual Trade Data for 2011, footwear imports into the US fell by 3.97 per cent during the year. China remained the number one footwear supplier, with 86.19 per cent market share in 2011, slightly down from the 2010 figure.

The next five footwear suppliers were Vietnam (6.57 per cent), Indonesia (2.59 per cent), Mexico (0.73 per cent), Italy (0.67 per cent) and Brazil (0.54 per cent. Of these, only Vietnam (+21.8 per cent), Indonesia (+27.9 per cent) and Mexico (+7.4 per cent) recorded growth.

Interestingly, US imports from Cambodia (position 12) rose by 172.6 per cent, 16th-placed Bangladesh
saw a 138.2 per cent boost in its sales to the US, and shoemakers in the number 18 nation, Nicaragua, experienced a significant 828.0 per cent growth to total 729,000 pairs.
