North American nations join forces on footwear chemical safety

Canada, the United States and Mexico are working together to eliminate toxic materials in footwear and apparel. The three countries have reached an understanding which they say will strengthen their trilateral cooperation on consumer safety.

According to a recently released statement, Health Canada, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Consumer Protection Federal Agency of Mexico (Profeco) have agreed to cooperate in six areas. These include consultation on proposed regulations, voluntary standards and potential joint recalls and other corrective action, as well as cooperation on risk assessment, import and market surveillance, training and outreach – in North America and further afield – and coordination of consumer awareness campaigns.

SATRA is a registered third-party laboratory for CPSIA lead testing. We welcome these governmental efforts to coordinate and clarify chemical safety requirements in the region, and we will help our members to ensure that their products comply with regulations around the world.
