Vietnamese tanner PrimeAsia Leather Company has replaced the heavy oil burners previously used to create the steam required for its operations with new biomass steam production equipment which burns rice husks. The rice husks are collected from rice processing plants around Vietnam and turned into pellets in a factory near Ho Chi Minh City.
According to PrimeAsia, using rice husk pellets provides significant environmental benefits when compared to the burning of heavy oil. Before installing the biomass steam production units, PrimeAsia burned over 150,000 litres of heavy oil each month to create the required steam. The company now has the potential to reduce its CO2 emissions by a reported 98 per cent.
PrimeAsia has set itself the goal of lowering its overall energy, water and waste footprint per square foot of leather by 30 per cent in the next five years. The company has also announced that it is committed to decreasing the carbon footprint of its leather products.
