Sri Lanka plans to boost leather product exports
Plans are in place to increase Sri Lanka’s leather product exports from around $3.3 million in 2009 to $25 million by 2015. Attempts will also be made to attract niche market buyers and develop local sales to the tourism industry. According to the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, demand for leathergoods has increased sharply due to rapid development in the local tourism industry.
Fourteen tanneries process rawhide and skins to semi-finished and finished leather in the Colombo District, and the production of tanneries is reportedly close to 28 tons of raw material per day. The total production of local raw hides and skins is said to be 8,400 tons per annum, with finished leather used for both domestic and export purposes. A considerable number of small factories produce various leathergoods for the local domestic and tourist markets, and some tanneries are extending their operations to include the production of travel goods and leather garments.
