Understanding adhesion – part 4: ageing
Examining the effects of ageing on adhesives used in footwear production.
Adhesives are the most common method of sole bonding on nearly all styles of footwear. These adhesives and the bond that is formed can be affected by environmental ageing – the exposure to heat and moisture over a length of time. The way these bonds are affected by long-term ageing can be assessed by exposure to accelerated ageing conditions. SATRA has a number of test methods that can be used to investigate ageing processes. This article describes the adhesion of standard buffed upper leather to polyurethane soling rubber, which is the subject of these test methods.
