European requirements for footwear labelling
Anyone supplying, importing or selling footwear in the European market needs to be aware of the legal requirements for labelling. Here, we explains the current legislation.
Consumer regulations across the world require that goods be labelled in many different ways. For instance, it is common for countries to require that all imported good are labelled with the country of origin – the USA is a good example here. Material composition is also a common labelling requirement. Textile goods are often required to detail the fibre type, including proportions, or the presence of fibres of animal origin such as fur. Labelling systems aimed specifically at footwear are less common, however. Indeed, the European Union is almost unique in this respect.
