Edge treatments in shoemaking
Most types of footwear have a topline (the top edge of the upper). This can be a very vulnerable area of the shoe, especially if it is not constructed carefully or is without the correct reinforcement.
The topline provides much of the resistance to the strains of lasting and last slipping. It can also be subjected to severe stretching, as well as flexing stresses and strains during normal wear. It is unlikely that failures can be renovated or disguised in the factory (or repaired during the shoe’s lifetime).
