A question of substance

Sole thickness is fundamental to the design and performance of a shoe. This article describes how to measure ‘effective thickness’ to ensure adequate performance in a number of respects.

Achieving correct effective thickness is critical to the sole achieving the required balance of durability, ground insulation, weight and flexibility. Therefore, being able to understand, specify and measure effective thickness is a useful tool for both customers and suppliers in the manufacturing chain.
