When organisations are considering the end-of-life impact of different materials in a product the question "How biodegradable is it?" is often asked.

Karl Flowers, Co-founder and Director of Authenticae and SATRA's Technical Adviser, Tom Bayes, will discuss some of the tests available such as ISO 20136:2020 Leather. Determination of degradability by micro-organisms and ISO 202000:2015 Plastics. Determination of the degree of disintegration of plastic materials under simulated composting conditions in a laboratory-scale test.

They will explore the benefits and limitations of the tests and also look at plant response testing to consider whether leather compost can be safely applied to agricultural land.
