Basic shoemaking step-by-step
Wednesday 4th December 2024 to Thursday 5th December 2024
This event is available to SATRA members only
SATRA's long-running and popular basic shoemaking course is now taking bookings for December 2024.
This two-day on-site course starts with learning about basic shoemaking terminology as well as different footwear styles. We then discuss the various processes used to put the footwear together, focusing on the stages in the stitching and making rooms.
A review of the key materials used to make footwear will be included, with discussions on upper materials (leathers, synthetics and textiles), sole materials and also components including insoles, toe puffs (box toes) and stiffeners (counters).
Day two begins with the different ways of attaching soles and ancillary operations such as shoe room finishing and inspection. Afterwards, we examine factors that affect the customer, including fit, comfort and consumer complaints. There will also be a discussion on quality control tests with a tour of the laboratories.
This is an introductory course to the shoemaking process. It is especially suited to those who are new to the industry and want a broad grounding in the topic. Marketing staff, buyers, designers, material suppliers and any other personnel would benefit from attending. It is an excellent opportunity to meet and learn face-to-face with SATRA experts and to handle materials as part of the learning experience.
