The design of studded footwear, sometimes referred to as cleated footwear, is influenced by many factors such as; the degree of traction required, the interaction with the sports surface, and whether the sport is ‘contact’ or ‘non-contact' in nature.

If studded footwear is worn for a contact sport then safety becomes an issue. Different surfaces can also present issues such as the danger of torsional injury. Jeremy Hazard discusses.
