Welted constructions are one of the oldest methods of producing footwear. They offer opportunities for sustainability through durability, repairability and restorability with many countries experimenting with introducing their own “Durability Index” measures for footwear to reduce waste. However, the welt must be durable, and a key constructional component is the rib and its adhesion to the insole. The key test method for this is TM405.
Jez Hazard will explain the test process and the various ageing applied to the test specimens. There will also be a brief explanation of the construction and how it can be applied to a greener future.
