Protective Clothing – General Requirements

This Standard covers general requirements for all protective clothing requiring CE marking in Europe and must be considered along with the specific standard for the item in question.

The Standard ‘specifies general performance requirements for ergonomics, innocuousness, size designation, ageing, compatibility and marking of protective clothing and the information to be supplied by the manufacturer with the protective clothing’.

Ergonomics

Incorporating correct design, sufficient comfort to the wearer (bearing in mind the safety properties of the garment), dimensional change from repeated cleaning, and the methods used such as dry cleaning, washing etc.

Innocuousness

Ensuring that the clothing does not adversely affect the health of the wearer.

Size Designation

A requirement for clothing to be marked with the correct size based on standard body dimensions.

Ageing

The change of property of one or more component over time to the detriment of the clothing.

Compatibility and Marking

Ensuring that the clothes marking is in the correct language for the intended market, that they are attached to the clothing and visible, and that they are durable to appropriate cleaning.

Supporting Information

All supporting information will be required in the Technical file for each item to be marked. A full list of requirements can be obtained from a notified body such as SATRA Technology Centre.
