Test Method: SATRA TM6
Water absorption and desorption - total immersion method
March 1993
SCOPE
This method is intended to determine the rate at which a material absorbs and desorbs water. The method is mainly applicable to fibreboard footwear insole materials but can be used with any type of sheet material.
PRINCIPLE
Method 1 – Absorption per unit area
The mass of water absorbed by a test specimen, with sealed edges, after it has been fully immersed in water for set times is divided by the surface area of the test specimen.
Method 2 – Absorption and desorption
The mass of water absorbed by a test specimen, without sealed edges, after it has been fully immersed in water for a set time is divided by the original mass of the test specimen. The mass of the test specimen is measured again after a period of storage in a standard atmosphere.
