Needle penetration force

SCOPE
This method is intended to determine the force required to push a sewing machine needle through a standard material. The method is applicable to all types of industrial sewing needles.
PRINCIPLE
A needle is clamped in a jig in a compression testing machine and pushed through either leather or a heavy textile, as appropriate, clamped in a separate jig. The force required is recorded. The method can be carried out on unaged needles as received, and after ageing by use.
