Test Method: SATRA TM276
Tensile strength of looped jewellery
May 2002
SCOPE
This method is intended to determine the breaking force of ‘looped’ jewellery items, e.g. necklaces, chokers, bracelets and bangles.
PRINCIPLE
The item of jewellery is secured into a continuous loop using the clasp or other attachment designed for closure in wear. The completed loop is placed around two cylindrical bollards fitted to the jaws of a tensile testing machine. The jewellery item is then extended until it breaks and the maximum force is measured. The mode of failure is also recorded. Due to variations which can occur in items constructed from many components, it is recommended that many replicates of each item are assessed to ensure representative results are obtained.
