Test Method: SATRA TM338
Salzman test - detection of contamination by oxides of nitrogen
December 1992
SCOPE
This test method is intended to determine whether a material has been exposed to the oxides of nitrogen, a common cause of discolouration. The method is applicable to all materials.
PRINCIPLE
A square test specimen is immersed in a Salzman solution for up to 24 hours. At predetermined times the colour of the solution is examined. If free nitrogen groups are present on the surface of the specimen as a result of exposure to oxides of nitrogen the solution develops a pink/red colour.
