Test Method: SATRA TM352
Distinguishing between types of polyurethane
June 1999
SCOPE
This test method is intended to determine if a polyurethane material is of polyester or polyether type and also if it is aromatic or aliphatic. The method is applicable to all polyurethane materials.
PRINCIPLE
To distinguish between polyester and polyether polyurethanes, the surface of the material is spotted with methanolic solutions of potassium hydroxide and hydroxylammonium chloride. A few drops of dilute hydrochloric acid and ferric chloride solution are added and the colour produced indicates the polyurethane type. Where possible, confirmatory evidence from infrared spectroscopy is also used.
To distinguish between aromatic and aliphatic polyurethanes, the material surface is rubbed with a mixture of propan-2-ol and toluene. The degree of solution or swelling indicates the polyurethane type. Where possible, confirmatory evidence from infrared spectroscopy is also used.
