Nitrocellulose finishes - qualitative test

SCOPE
This test method is intended to determine whether a leather finish contains nitrocellulose. The method is applicable to all finished leathers used in footwear and similar products.
PRINCIPLE
A reagent solution is applied to:
Method 1- Light coloured materials: The surface of a test specimen.
Method 2- Dark coloured materials: An acetone extract of the test specimen.
The presence of nitrocellulose is indicated by the formation of a deep blue colour.
