Test Method: SATRA TM436
Determination of whole shoe thermal insulation value and cold rating
November 2010
SCOPE
This method is intended to determine the thermal insulation value and cold rating of complete footwear in conjunction with hose and is applicable to all types of footwear with a closed upper.
PRINCIPLE
Hose and footwear are placed on an artificial foot fitted with heating coils at its centre. The insulation value of the footwear/hose combination is determined from measurements of the electrical energy required to maintain the artificial foot at a steady temperature above that of the surroundings, the temperature differential between the foot and the surroundings and the surface area of the artificial foot. The cold rating is derived from the insulation value by reference to predetermined heat loss values associated with a range of activity levels.
