Test Method: SATRA TM58
Stiffness of steel shanks
May 1999
SCOPE
This method is intended to determine the stiffness of steel shanks used as reinforcements within footwear. It is applicable to steel shanks for all styles of footwear.
PRINCIPLE
The test specimen is clamped at the heel end and bent as a cantilever beam by adding weights to the free end. The extent of the bending is measured and used to calculate the flexural rigidity of the shank, a quantity which is a measure of stiffness and is independent of the length of the test specimen.
