Test Method: SATRA TM96
Security of heel pins
September 1995 (2017)
SCOPE
This method is intended to determine the heel pin holding strength of a heel component, or the heel pin pull out force on a completed shoe. The method is mainly applicable to plastic heels for women’s footwear but can also be used with wooden heels. The method is not appropriate for heels constructed from several layers of fibreboard or leather, or low plastic heels for men’s footwear.
PRINCIPLE
A tensile testing machine is used to measure the force required to pull heel pins out of a heel.
Method 1 – Heel pin holding strength – A standard buttress heel pin is used and the maximum pull out force is divided by the length of buttressing in the heel to give the holding strength.
Method 2 – Heel pin pull out force – The heel pins are pulled out of the heel of a completed shoe.
