Test Method: SATRA TM134
Density of materials by volume displacement
June 2024
SCOPE
This test method is intended to determine the density (mass per unit volume) of materials by measuring their volume displacement in water. The method is mainly applicable to rubbers and plastics but can be used with any type of non-absorbent material.
PRINCIPLE
The test specimen is first weighed in air. It is then reweighed fully immersed in water. The apparent loss in weight is equal to the weight of water displaced, see clause 8.1. The volume displacement, equal to the volume of the test piece, is then calculated and divided into the weight in air to give the density. See also clause 8.2 for explanation of the synonymous terms ‘Specific gravity’ and ‘Relative density’.
